Vaughn Gitton Jr. wings the D1GP All Star World Finals

Powered by the Falken Mustang, Gitton takes the final trophy home Sunday in Irwindale Ca USA

How are these events Judged?

judges evaluate speed, angle of attack and vehicle control and factors like slowing to the point of hindering the other driver, running into another car or spinning out mean an automatic loss of the run. To advance to the next round, drivers use tactics such as putting pressure on an opponent through a more aggressive drift angle, carrying a higher speed through a corner, and showing good strategy. Judges are thoroughly familiar with the capabilities of each competitor's car and if the driver is not pushing the car to the limit, they will be eliminated from the round. In spite of the high stakes and close competition, D1GP drivers are expected to exercise outstanding showmanship and a professional code of conduct, or a "warrior etiquette", that make D1GP competitions the most exciting and dramatic of all drift competitions in the world.

Points determining a driver's final score are awarded on following elements:

1. Angle
2. Speed
3. Line - closer to race line clipping points is better
4. Throttle position - wide open throttle is better
5. Whether the vehicle accelerates on the straightway

The D1 Grand Prix judging system has been further enhanced with the recent introduction of the DriftBox Pro in all D1GP competitions, including USA rounds. The DriftBox Pro is a real-time telemetry device that was originally developed for use in the D1 Grand Prix series to assist the judges award points during the competition, and has become in effect the fourth "Judge". Every team that competes in D1 is provided with an official DriftBox Pro mounting bracket to allow the DriftBox Pro to be fitted for each run. The judges receive real-time data for each corner based on entry speed, drift angle and cornering force. Cornering force is used to judge how well the car is setup, the higher the cornering force, the more power and skill are needing to slide the vehicle.
